The Hospitals of Providence Introduces New Minimally Invasive Robotic Lung Biopsy Procedure

Robotic-assisted technology Ion helps detect lung cancer earlier and improve outcomes

EL PASO, Texas — The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus is proud to introduce a cutting-edge, robotic assisted technology called the Ion, to enhance the care of patients with lung abnormalities, to detect lung cancer earlier and improve outcomes.

The Ion’s robotic-assisted platform allows for a minimally invasive biopsy of the lung. The system’s precision and flexibility enable optimal lung navigation and produce more accurate biopsies. The Ion is used for lung cancer screening and early diagnosis by providing more access to small airways or hard-to-reach nodules that other technologies are unable to achieve, as well as for patients who are not surgical candidates, but are in need of biopsies to treat cancers.

“Having this new technology available is a huge win for our patients as it significantly reduces the risk of complications,” said Dr. Barat Prakash, Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist who performed the first procedure. “The Ion allows us to reduce the number of procedures patients have to undergo while also helping to more quickly diagnose cancers and provide more precise treatment.”

The Ion fiber optic technology provides accuracy and precision, along with real-time vision of the airway throughout the navigation process and real-time shape information throughout the entire biopsy.

“As the oncology epicenter for The Hospitals of Providence, the Memorial Campus is committed to advancing technology and services to help improve cancer outcomes for our patients,” said Rob J. Anderson, Chief Executive Officer for The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus. “We are committed to improving and expanding cancer care for our community.”
